On the hottest night of the year so far, residents and representatives of the Lakewood Heights, Lower Greenville, and Lowest Greenville West neighborhood associations — roughly bounded by Ross Avenue, Mockingbird Lane, Skillman Street, and Greenville Avenue — along with the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire-Rescue swarmed Tietze Park.

The groups united for National Night Out in an effort to increase crime watch activities and volunteer patrol groups in the area to help reduce crime. The event also served as a way for neighbors to get to know neighbors, which should help crime watch efforts in terms of communication among local residents and cooperation with the police and fire departments.
Meanwhile, Lakewood residents went about their normal Tuesday evening activities and pretty much ignored National Night Out. Lakewood Neighborhood Association Crime Watch lady Nancy Wilson said she wants to find a better way to unite people on the east side of Abrams Road to fight crime.
"I believe, based on prior attendance at LNA picnics, that few people would come out in the August heat for a NNO. I believe in getting people involved in preventing crime, but NNO in August is not the best time for Texas. I would love to brainstorm with others to find a better way to unite neighbors in fighting crime," she said.
