Alexandra Binder, Drew Sherger, and Adam Roossein rock their summer camp at Zounds Sounds School of Rock.
At my house, "School of Rock" has acquired a permanent place on our TiVO playlist, our preteen's decorating scheme, and dinnertime conversation. It's going to be a loooong summer.
However, it's just fantasy and talk with my child, as her Daisy Rock guitar still is gathering dust in the corner. Not so for the kids at Zounds Sounds School of Rock. No, Jack Black doesn't teach there, but a bunch of the most respected and hippest rockers in Dallas do.
If your 14-year-old is a budding guitarist, try finding some time in Chris Holt's schedule. What about piano, erm, scratch that, keyboard? No Bach, but maybe some Bachman Turner Overdrive.
The kids are getting into '70s retro music these days. The Hannah Montana at your house could use some vocal training? Zounds Sounds has got you covered with two of the Observer's Musicians of the Year on staff in addition to a couple of Berklee graduates.
Bass, drums, and everything needed to make a rock band is in place. And who wouldn't like a drum teacher who's motto is "know more, use less?"
Zounds Sounds' Rock Camps meet for one week, throughout the summer, then record a CD at the end of the week. Participants are grouped into bands based on age, ability, and instrument, so the camps aren't the best for total beginners, but a great way to get kids excited about the real way music is performed: with other musicians.
