Magdalen House makes a home for recovering alcoholic women in East Dallas.
Affectionately dubbed Maggie’s, a nonprofit, non-medical, free detoxification center for women, is in dire need of funds to make urgent repairs to its two-story duplex in a quiet neighborhood of East Dallas.
It is the first and only detox center in Dallas of its kind.
“We would like to raise $300,000,” said Julie Harvey, treasurer of the volunteer board of directors of Magdalen House and a recovered alcoholic. “We have limited funds. Most of our budget of $130,000 goes for the maintenance of this house. Our garage where we keep community donations is in so bad shape we can’t keep the donations there. Animals get in. Things are rotting. And we recently had a major water leak in the house [on the first floor], 4 inches deep, ruining the carpet and lifting the floor in the office.”
The center raises funds from grants, garage sales twice a year, bingo games, donations from the community, and an annual golf tournament. This year’s tournament takes place Friday, Oct. 23, at Sherrill Park Golf Course.
