Appreciating Volunteers

The Whole Earth Provision Co. earned For the Love of the Lake's highest honor for Adopt-a-Shoreline volunteers: the 2009 Group of the Year Award.

The crew from the Mockingbird Lane store hauled hundreds of pounds of trash out of White Rock Lake during National Public Lands Day, Sep. 26. The trash included two 50-gallon drums embedded in the mud, a crate, and a shoe, plus multiple bags of debris.

Steve Tompkins gave out certificates — printed on recycled paper, of course — to many of the agencies that made the cleanup of the lake possible. Dignitaries such as Mayor Tom Leppert, Councilman Jerry Allen, and Deputy Chief of Police Thomas Lawrence were on hand to thank the volunteer groups for their service.

Dallas Park and Recreation Department Assistant Directors Reggie Hurd and John Jenkins said that with the staff cuts this year, they were especially appreciative of the volunteer Adopt-a-Shoreline groups that made the effort to come out on Second Saturday cleanups.
