Home Construction Raises Concerns

Some Lakewood residents say a large house under construction in the 6800 block of Merrilee Lane may not conform to the spirit of the Lakewood-North Ridge Estates neighborhood overlay.

“I and all of my neighbors have serious concerns about this giant Ron Davis [Custom Homes] house up on our block,” said Shannon Durst, who lives on Merrilee Lane. “Does it fit within the [neighborhood] overlay? Is the garage really eight feet off the alley?”

A neighborhood stabilization overlay is designed to preserve the character of the neighborhood through procedures and restrictions for building new single-family homes. It also is to keep out larger homes, also known as McMansions, from popping up next door to smaller structures.

District 9 Councilman Sheffie Kadane said a resident of Lakewood-North Ridge Estates called him recently complaining about the size of the house. He then asked city staff to check on whether or not the new construction has been issued a city building permit.
