This plaque honoring Lt. Col. Edwin Atterberry, Woodrow class of ’52, will be rededicated at the school during a Veterans Day commemoration.
The Woodrow Wilson High School JROTC conducts its traditional Veterans Day observance starting at 10:15 a.m., Nov. 12, at the school.
The ceremony takes place the day after Veterans Day this year because the WWJROTC marches in the Veterans Day parade downtown the day before.
It is a simple, scripted, short ceremony outside at the flagpole, in front of the school. This year, special recognition of Edwin Atterberry, class of ’52, will be given.
During his Air Force career, Atterberry helped the United States stare down the Soviet Union during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Forty years ago last May, Atterberry was shot down over North Vietnam. He was captured, escaped, recaptured, and tortured to death. It is a remarkable story, lost to the Woodrow community until a commemorative plaque was recently discovered on an old podium behind the stage.
Mrs. Atterberry, her family members, and friends will be in attendance. The plaque will be rededicated, and additional plaques will be presented.
