We field a fair number of questions around here. We can answer some of them, and we pass along others to people with far more knowledge of a given subject. This one falls into that latter category.
A faithful reader and frequent commenter who lives in Hollywood-Santa Monica needs help with selecting colors and such for her home as she anticipates putting it on the market come spring. I am far from qualified to offer sound advice, so I’ll pass it on:
As spring and summer come … as we clean up our home, paint the interior of our home, to keep or put on the market …
What are the selling colors that people are using? What are happy, cheerful colors that help sell homes? Do we use soft colors? Sophisticated colors? A color per room? What colors sell well? What colors do we use in a 2 bed, 1 bath house? We have just painted our kitchen a nice yellow & white to reflect light well in a kitchen. What are the recommended colors these days?
I am bored in our home and would like to paint seller-friendly colors to liven the house up … make it more welcoming, more inviting and cheerful. Also what kind of furniture is recommended to make a house more inviting? Is going the "Dump" the best or is there somewhere that we can get lower price furniture with good quality?
How do people decorate up the bedrooms these days? Is it sophisticated or casual? I have a maroon Ralph Lauren comforter from an estate sale, but that’s it — no matching pillowcases. What do the designers recommend?
Thanking you in advance, as I learn how to be creative on a very low budget. — Kristin

Toasted Pine Nut.. and colors up and down the strip are very popular. As for furniture/decorating.. less is more. Store your family photos, declutte as much as you can, color coordinate your closet <it will make it look bigger> and put a few color pops here and there. Kitchen and bathroom are the focals, followed closely by master bedroom. Make your front entry very appealing. You don't want a prospective buyer standing there looking at an ill-painted door and bland porch while the realtor gets the place open. I had a very good advisor and was able to sell my home last July in a not-so-good market within 30 days. Rent a pod, storage space, whatever... just make it a soft, blank pallet that your buyers can visualize their belongings in. Good luck!
