About Black White Read, Lakewood edition

Black White Read, Lakewood edition, is the debut publication of Black White Read, LLC, devoted to up-to-the-minute news and information from and for the Lakewood neighborhood in Dallas, Texas.

We have crafted a new sort of local Web site, combining extensive neighborhood information with local journalism. We'd like to become your "go to" online destination for everything Lakewood. We're working with local schools, businesses, churches, and organizations to bring you up-to-date information, including an extensive community calendar. We're hiring writers and photographers to bring you news and features about you, your neighbors, and your neighborhood.

In short, we aim to be the online destination that connects the internet--where you are spending increasing amounts of time--with the physical neighborhood in which you live. In so doing, we hope to strengthen our community ties and make Lakewood an even better place to live.

Here's what we aim to be:

  • Your source for local information. We will publish all the community information we can get our hands on. We want you to be able to come to the Lakewood edition for meeting times, school calendars, church service times, club meetings, and all the rest.
  • An online partner for local civic groups and organizations. For example, we are working with the Pet Watch program to widen their communication network when a neighborhood pet is lost.
  • An outlet for local writers, photographers, and those who aspire to same. We have already brought three fine young writers and three excellent photographers from Woodrow Wilson High School on board as interns, and hope to add to that roster.
  • A way for you to get to know more about your neighbors. We have queued up some very interesting features about people you know--and some that you don't know yet.
  • A source and a conduit for local news. We welcome your input in the form of stories, story ideas, or photographs. If it happens in Lakewood, you'll see it at Black White Read, Lakewood edition.

Black White Read, Lakewood edition, the business

Community Web sites are nothing new, but the overwhelming majority of neighborhood sites start with a bang, then fizzle out in a few months as volunteer enthusiasm wanes.

The Lakewood edition is a venture of Black White Read, LLC. We have created a sustainable business model for online community newspapers. This model is pretty straightforward: we will provide entrepreneur-publishers across the country with the tools and methods to create great local online newspapers, supported by local advertising. Black White Read will reap its reward by selling national advertising across this network of local newspapers.

Local entrepreneurs working with local advertisers to publish timely and useful news and information that strengthens communities. And it all starts here, in Lakewood.
